Los escritos a continuación se refieren a la historia de los inmigrantes chinos en Panamá, su consolidación como una comunidad activa dentro del diverso conglomerado demográfico del país. Se hace énfasis en el hecho de que luego de iniciarse como una inmigración de obreros para las grandes obras que se construyeron en Panamá, durante los siglos XIX y XX, observamos su gran movilidad laboral dentro del país; de obreros no calificados a pequeños y medianos comerciantes. Se destacan en la inmigración china las llamadas oleadas migratorias (Mon, 1998) que co- rrespondieron a las catástrofes geográficos, problemas económicos y lu- chas políticas tanto de China como de Panamá. Igualmente se describe la relación poco transparente de los distintos gobiernos y sus leyes con respecto a la migración en general y de los chinos en particular. Los escri- tos se centran en la evolución cultural de la migración china a Panamá y no en la historia general del país de origen o del país receptor.

The writings below refer to the history of Chinese immigrants to Pa- nama, their consolidation as an active community within the country's diverse demographic conglomerate. Emphasis is made on the fact that after starting as an immigration of unskilled workers for the great pro- jects that were built in Panama during the 19th and 20th centuries, we observed their great labor mobility within the country; from unskilled workers to small merchants. Prominent in Chinese immigration are the so-called migratory waves (Mon, 1998) that corresponded to geographic accidents, economic events and political struggles in both China and Panama. Likewise, the untransparent relationship between the different governments and their immigration laws related to migration in general and the Chinese in particular, is described. The writings focus on the cultural evolution of the Chinese migration to Panama and not on the general history of the country of origin or the receiving country.
