The treasured paintings and sculpture of Europe and America are spread out in profusion, in full-color photos and reproductions, against a variety of backdrops. The pictures range in size from postage stamp to full page, and boxed snippets from various works decorate the assemblages gathered as examples of each historical period. The texts are quite brief; each major artist receives only a few sentences, and while some attempt is made to characterize the various schools of art and to catalog the changes in techniques and subject matter over the centuries, the rapid pace of the survey produces a bewildering collection of details, names, and vocabulary.
